Overview of Internet

The Internet according to William F. Slater is;
  • A network of networks, joining many government, university and private computers together
  • that which provides an infrastructure for the use of E-mail, bulletin boards, file archives, hypertext documents, databases and other computational resources
  •  Vast collection of computer networks which form and act as a single huge network for transport of data and messages across distances which can be anywhere from the same office to anywhere in the world
 In other words, Internet can be described as:
  • largest network of networks in the world
  • Uses TCP/IP protocols and packet switching
  • Runs on any communication substrate.
In the 1840s, what was known as the "Victorian Internet" was invented in a form a telegraph in which signals were sent over wires were established over vast distances. This was used extensively by the U.S. Government during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The telegraphs were written in Morse Code; dots and dashes/ short signals and long signals.
